Biography: Miramar
>>VIEW SONGLIST
Miramar brings love and anti-love songs about longing to a new generation. They revive the bolero, a classic Latin American musical tradition popular during the 1950’s and 60’s. Performing a mix of original and classic songs in the Puerto Rican style, Miramar presents romantic music sung in intricate harmonies by vocalists Laura Ann Singh and Reinaldo Alvarez, who doubles on maracas. Their voices are augmented by the acoustic guitar as well as the eloquent flourishes of leader Marlysse Simmons who alternates between the piano and a haunting B3-like organ. The rhythm section consists of the resonant pluck of the acoustic bass and Giustino Riccio on bongo, congas or clave sticks.
Alvarez, an accomplished lyricist and composer, was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. A descendent of Juan Morel Campos, the father of Puerto Rican Danza, Alvarez absorbed a deep appreciation and passion for music. He, along with Marlysse Simmons and Giustino Riccio, are veteran members of the internationally acclaimed Salsa band Bio Ritmo. Together with Laura Ann Singh, the renowned, soulful vocalist of Quatro Na Bossa, they started Miramar in Spring 2009.
Many of the songs featured by Miramar are by the singer/songwriter Sylvia Rexach. Known in Puerto Rico as one of the most famous and prolific composers of bolero music, she was never duly recognized for her accomplishments abroad. Other influences include the great Felipe ‘La Voz’ Rodriguez and the unforgettable Duo Irizarry de Córdova. Miramar’s repertoire also reflects the universal appeal of the genre, including songs in Greek by the legendary Stellios Kantzidis. Miramar’s repertoire also reflects the universal appeal of the genre, including songs in Greek by the legendary Stellios Kantzidis - one example of the international movements that arose and paralleled the Latin American bolero revolution in its lyrical content, purpose and overall style.
