Biography: Joshua Walker Band
Joshua Walker’s musical career has taken him to many different places since he started playing guitar 17 years ago. He began private lessons with guitarist Mike Ess, a member of the jazz faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, when he was 14 years old. After high school, he attended VCU and graduated from the University in 1999. He returned to school in 2001 after receiving a scholarship to attend The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. During this time he was also awarded the Charlie Byrd Memorial Scholarship in Guitar from the school. He was one of the first 9 full time jazz students to attend Peabody. He was the first ever full-time jazz guitar student at the Conservatory. His time at the Conservatory allowed him to study with giants of the jazz world such as Gary Thomas, Paul Bollenback, Greg Osby, Michael Formanek, and Howard Curtis.
Joshua has had the opportunity to perform in many venues and festivals, nationally and internationally. He has performed on the same concert bill as Charlie Byrd and the Washington Guitar Quintet as well as appearing at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. He has also fulfilled four contracts aboard cruise ships as a musician visiting 10 different countries. He currently leads his own groups, The Joshua Walker Trio, and Joshua Walker and Myriad, in performances in the United States and Canada. These groups perform largely his compositions as well as a few compositions of some of the other members. These groups have a modern and progressive sound, and Joshua will often employ the use of midi effects via Guitar Synthesizer as well as playing a more traditional, hollow body guitar. Joshua can also be found doing restaurant, cocktail, and corporate gigs appearing in either solo, duo, or trio format. He also performs in R&B and pop music groups of varying size. In addition to this he performs with The Martin K Peterson Organ Quartet, which performs soul-jazz groove music and the Adam Young/Joshua Walker Group, which performs funk-oriented jazz, as well as being a part of the house band for the Thursday jam session at JM Randalls in Williamsburg, Virginia. Joshua also plays mandolin and bouzou.
