It's the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart and the tinkling of the piano. It's the music of the elegant Duke Ellington and two brothers named Gershwin, the soft clanking of glasses on candlelit tables. It's the song Johnny Hartman crooned, Sinatra lived and Nat King Cole swung. It's the style of an era passed but still yearned for. It's the flavor of Louis Armstrong's heart and soul, the tone you can taste. It's the flame of the torch that still does flicker, carried on in steady hand. It is the single love of lyric and song, to be sung.
Vocalist CHARLES DARDEN continues to develop his baritone voice while performing music from the Great American Songbook. This traditional Pop/Jazz singer performs this music with respect and care while still allowing his love of Jazz to season his style. CHARLES DARDEN has the ability to swing with the finest Jazz players as well as deliver the perfect emotion to a slow, beautiful ballad. Frank Sinatra called them "saloon songs" Along with Sinatra, CHARLES DARDEN has been greatly influenced by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Sammy Davis, Jr., Johnny Hartman, Louis Prima, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Harry Connick, Jr., Joe Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Darden loves to listen to a variety of instrumental Jazz from trios, traditional New Orleans, Big Band as well as Gospel music and Rhythm and Blues.
Notable highlights include performing at President George W. Bush’s first Inaugural Ball at the Ronald Reagan Center in Washington D.C. on January 20, 2001. Darden has put on four theater shows in the Hampton Roads area at the Peninsula Community theater, the American theater, Kimball and Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium at Thomas Nelson. The CHARLES DARDEN QUARTET has performed at resorts such as The Greenbrier, Fords Colony and Hilton Head SC, as well as countless clubs and outdoor festivals. THE CHARLES DARDEN QUARTET has performed for charitable organizations such as St. Judes (Jazz Fest). the Childresn's Hospital of the King's Daughter, Starlight Children's Foundation and Hope House Foundation.
